Buying: Inhale. Gravitate toward the berries that smell like they are calling your name. Make sure the berries are plump. Blackberries with the best flavor are dull black, however they won't last long at this stage. This is a good example of why buying locally-grown produce pays off.
Check the bottoms of the containers for leaking juices, crushed fruit (if you can see through the bottom), and mold. If the containers aren't dry, don't buy. Avoid blackberries that are reddened, damaged, or still have husks attached.
Storing: When you get your berries home, pick through them and take out any damaged ones. Do not wash berries until right before you are ready to eat or cook them. Spread them in a single layer on top of dry paper towels, and put them in the fridge. Don't put them in an airtight container. Eat them within a few days, and if you're eating them fresh, let them get to room temperature first for the best flavor.
